It is estimated that 17.3 million American adults have had at least one episode of depression at some point during their lives. As far as mental health goes, it’s one of the most common, human struggles someone could experience.
So if you’re someone who’s struggling to cope, know that you are not alone. And while overcoming depression can seem frustratingly difficult, there are a few things we all can do to give ourselves a fighting chance in this battle inside our heads.
Here are five simple, but effective tips to help you cope.
1. Make Small Changes to Your Lifestyle
It’s no secret that good nutrition and consistent exercise go a long way in promoting a healthy mind. However, making drastic changes to your life, especially when you’re depressed, can be exceptionally hard.
So, why not start small?
For example, instead of trying to take on the overwhelming task of exercising every single day, start by taking short walks twice or thrice a week. Similarly, instead of taking on a whole new diet, try including one healthy meal into your diet every day.
2. Develop a Strong System of Support
Developing a sense of resilience is a key part of overcoming depression. An unfortunate truth of life is that occasionally falling down is an inevitability. However, the ability to get back up is vital.
During those times when we’re down, it can help to have a strong, supportive system that can help us get back up on our feet. So take the time to filter out the good friends from the bad ones and find yourself a therapist who’s on the same wavelength as you.
3. Be Honest With Yourself
It isn’t always easy, to be honest about yourself to yourself. But the sooner you confront your demons, the closer you’ll be to a life of contentment. So talk to yourself, reflect, introspect, and take a deep dive into your heart!
4. Create a Plan of Action for When You’re Down
Depression can lead us down some dark paths that are usually better left untravelled. During these times, it always helps to have a backup plan.
One thing you can do to prepare for these times is to make a list of everything you are grateful for or a list of things you have to look forward to. When you find yourself slipping down that path again, read what you’ve written, and perhaps it’ll help you rekindle the hope within you.
5. Be Open to Alternatives
