Predictions for the Champions League Final 2019

Lionel Messi against Liverpool - Champions League Semi Final

It’s that time of year again where the giants of Europe fight it out to try and become champions of Europe. There are four teams left – Barcelona, Liverpool, Tottenham and Ajax. After the 1st leg, Barcelona are very likely to progress to the final after winning 3-0 against Liverpool, and barring a defeat on their own ground, Ajax are likely to join them too.

If Spurs managed to overturn their first leg defeat to Ajax, they have many big-name players who have experience of taking home Europe’s top accolade. It is my opinion that they would give Barcelona more of a test than Ajax. Is that unfair to assume that?

Due to the controversial away goals rule, Tottenham have to come out the traps all guns blazing and score at least twice, even if Ajax were to score. This means it is likely to be quite an open game with lots of scoring. Many expect Ajax to sit in and defend their lead, but from what I have seen of Ajax in the last year or so, they tend to play attacking football, especially at the Amsterdam Arena. Erik ten Hag, the manager of Ajax, says they need to put in a “mature” performance that far outweighs the ages of his players. I feel that they can do this and come through the 2nd leg.

So, if it is indeed a Barcelona – Ajax final, like I predict, who is likely to be victorious?

With Messi in sparkling form, having scored a freekick from 35 yards out to secure his 600th Barcelona goal last week, it is difficult to see past the Catalans for winning this year’s competition. But, don’t write off Ajax, who’s young players have certainly made Europe sit up and take notice of their talents by brushing aside far more experienced teams en-route to the semi final. But, when it comes to the final, big game mentalities need to come to the fore, and I can’t see past Barcelona winning.

Lionel Messi (biography here –’t the only one to look out for in the final. Luis Suarez has been in sparkling form, and he will be keen to upstage his Argentinian strike partner. I feel he will be the star of the show – possibly scoring two goals on the way to Barca lifting the European Cup (see more about this here). What do you think? Check out for the latest odds.
