The first successful interactions between the United States and Japan is believed to have occurred in 1854. Today, less than 200 years later, Japan’s tourism industry is booming.

Among the tourists flocking to its shores are families. Much like anywhere else, Japan can be a very family-friendly destination if you know what to see and what to avoid.

It’s a fascinating country with a magnificent culture and history, and children can enjoy and learn about it in the same way adults can

There are a lot of incredible ways to enjoy Japan with your kids. We’ll talk about a few of them in the paragraphs below.

1. Shopping

One of the most popular things to do in Japan is shopping. This country is known for its shopping areas, and it doesn’t hurt that Japanese culture has inspired many children’s shows, movies, and toys.

Hello Kitty, Pokemon, and the videogame companies Nintendo and Sony all trace their origins to Japan. Needless to say, many kids will find something to enjoy in Japan.

Unlike some other Asian countries, Japan doesn’t have many night markets, which can be good news or bad depending on how you look at it. On the one hand, it may be easier to get the kids to go to bed if there’s not as much to do at night.

However, it’s also one less thing to do if you decide to have date night while the kids are asleep.

2. Food

An important part of seeing Japan with your kids is finding things your kids will eat. The good news is that there’s a lot to choose from. In addition to the long list of great Japanese lunch and dinner dishes, there are also breakfasts and desserts.

When it comes to breakfast, pancakes are a very popular dish. However, Japan does pancakes very differently than we do. They have okonomiyaki, which is a bit like a mix between pancakes and pizza. You start by taking a flat bit of bread similar to a pancake and adding popular Japanese ingredients to it, such as vegetables, shrimp, beef, and a whole host of other things.

They also have a type of cotton candy, and  onigiri among others. Onigiri is a ball of rice with a ribbon of seaweed around it and a filling inside. Sometimes this filling is a sweet fruit, but it can be plenty of other things including teriyaki chicken.

If you have a craving for soda, try Ramune. Ramune is a Japanese soda that has a marble in it.

You open the bottle with a plastic cap that pushes the marble down into the bottle, thus unblocking the opening. Also, the bottle is designed so the marble can’t reach the opening, so there’s no danger of swallowing it.
