The Gloucester based movie, CODA, recently cleaned up at the 94th Academy Awards. CODA not only won one award, but it won all three of its nominations. The nominations included Best Support Actor, Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
With CODA’s success it made us want to learn more about Gloucester, Massachusetts and whether there were any other movies that were filmed in the area. After some research we have come to realized that this region of Massachusetts is a popular destination for film makers.
Gloucester is a part of a larger region on the North Shore of Massachusetts that is referred to as Cape Ann. This northern Massachusetts Cape, as opposed to Cape Cod in the south is comprised of the towns of Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester By The Sea and has been home to many award winning movies.

Movies From Gloucester, Massachusetts
Gloucester is known as a working fishing port and has a long, storied tradition of seafaring men. This tradition is famously commemorated by the Fishermen’s Memorial statue that is located on the waterfront.
One of the early Gloucester movies, is Captain’s Courageous. It is a coming-of-age tale that is based on a book by Rudyard Kipling and still holds up to this day.
Another famous Gloucester film is The Perfect Storm. This movie is packed with a superstar cast including Mark Wahlberg and George Clooney and recounts the tragedy that befell the crew of the Andrea Gail back in 1991.
Movies From Rockport, Massachusetts
In addition to Gloucester, there are some fun films that were produced in neighboring Rockport, Massachusetts.
Rockport was formerly a part of Gloucester until it broke off and formed it’s own little village back in 1840. Rockport has a rich history as an art colony, a quarrying town and a harbor for a fleet of lobstermen.
What better movies to uphold the history and beauty of the town than The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock.
In addition to this movie, Rockport was also the setting for Mermaids featuring Cher and Christina Ricci.
Movies From Manchester By The Sea
When you think of Manchester By the Sea, you likely think of the namesake uplifting movie starring Casey Affleck. But it was also home to the film State and Main which features a star studded cast including Alec Baldwin, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Sarah Jessica Parker.
