bowie md

If you’ve heard of Bowie MD, you probably have a pretty good idea of what the city is about. Quiet upper-class neighborhoods blend seamlessly with sophisticated downtown hangout spots, with attractions rich in historical and cultural significance all over the town. This is one of New England’s most attractive destinations for tourists and homesteaders alike, and upon arriving here, it’s easy to see why.

There are many things to do and see in the picturesque New England paradise; there’s so much to do, in fact, that you might not know where to start. If that’s the case with you, here is a list of things to see and do that will have you navigating the streets like a local!

The Belair Mansion

On the eastern edge of the historic Collington area of Bowie, stands a regal colonial-style mansion that has stood for over two centuries and housed not one, but two Maryland governors. This stately manor, dubbed the Belair Mansion, is steeped in history, and anyone with an interest in the history of Bowie is sure to enjoy the singular experience that the Belair mansion provides.

Another fascinating aspect of the Belair Mansion that might catch and hold your interest is the architecture. The Belair Mansion was constructed circa 1745, and the sumptuous details of the carefully crafted mansion speak to the artistry and skill that went into the construction of this stately home.

Patuxent Research Refuge

If you enjoy spending time in nature, why not chance a visit to the Patuxent Research Refuge? Established in 1936 by executive order of beloved president Franklin D. Roosevelt, this 52 square kilometer wildlife reserve presents a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the New England flora and fauna.

The mission of this preserve is to provide refuge for the wildlife of Maryland, where animals can flourish in an environment free from opportunistic hunters and invasive human development, as well as a place to safely study the local species without doing them any harm. Interestingly enough, this is the only government constructed wildlife refuge in the United States that was established specifically for research purposes.

Bowie Railroad Museum

If you like trains, you’ll love the Bowie Railroad Museum! At this fascinating Bowie historical site, you can find all kinds of spellbinding exhibits that will no doubt keep kids and adults occupied for hours. Although it may be small in size, don’t be fooled; this museum packs a ton of fun into its smaller-than-average package!

The first thing you’ll want to check out at this fantastic museum is the faithfully restored Railhouse, where you can find an accurate recreation of the telegraph messaging station. It is here that a faithful telegraph operator would be perpetually sending and receiving messages that kept the station running smoothly. Alongside this exhibit are others that detail numerous different tidbits about the day-to-day operations of this small rail station in days gone by.

Once you’ve perused the exhibits in the Railhouse, you can venture outside, where the Museum has an authentic B&O railway caboose that once traversed the rail line that runs right through bowie and led to its prominence as a rail city. Inside the caboose, you can marvel at the fascinating details of this railcar, and see what it was truly like to ride in a train all those years ago. This museum really is a captivating glimpse into yesteryear, and you simply can’t miss it!
