The Belair Mansion
On the eastern edge of the historic Collington area of Bowie, stands a regal colonial-style mansion that has stood for over two centuries and housed not one, but two Maryland governors. This stately manor, dubbed the Belair Mansion, is steeped in history, and anyone with an interest in the history of Bowie is sure to enjoy the singular experience that the Belair mansion provides.
Another fascinating aspect of the Belair Mansion that might catch and hold your interest is the architecture. The Belair Mansion was constructed circa 1745, and the sumptuous details of the carefully crafted mansion speak to the artistry and skill that went into the construction of this stately home.
Patuxent Research Refuge
If you enjoy spending time in nature, why not chance a visit to the Patuxent Research Refuge? Established in 1936 by executive order of beloved president Franklin D. Roosevelt, this 52 square kilometer wildlife reserve presents a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the New England flora and fauna.
The mission of this preserve is to provide refuge for the wildlife of Maryland, where animals can flourish in an environment free from opportunistic hunters and invasive human development, as well as a place to safely study the local species without doing them any harm. Interestingly enough, this is the only government constructed wildlife refuge in the United States that was established specifically for research purposes.
