3 Things You Need to Know When Buying 100% Pure Essential Oils

Want to buy essential oils but are not sure where to buy them from?

It can be frustrating to sort through the hundreds of brands available in-store and online, especially since there are so many different grades and types of oils available.

To make an informed decision you need to become aware of the differences in the oils available, so you know what to look for.

Below, are three key things you need to know when you want to buy 100% pure essential oils:

Synthetic oils vs. Natural essential oils

Synthetic oils

As the name suggests, synthetic oils are made synthetically in a lab using chemicals, and are usually petroleum-based. The idea is to re-create some of the properties found in nature in a test tube. If you see a price on an oil that seems too good to be true, you can be sure it is a synthetic oil, as these are relatively cheap to mass produce.

Synthetic oils can mimic the aroma of a plant, but they rarely contain the active, therapeutic compounds of a plant. These are the types of aromas that may give you a headache, and are used in cheap perfumes, candles, chemical air fresheners and more. They are not suitable for aromatherapy.

Natural essential oils

Natural essential oils are derived and extracted from a real plant, and so are naturally more expensive that synthetic oils. You might think you can just opt for these, but there are things you need to look out for when choosing natural as well.

Natural oils vs. 100% pure essential oils

Natural essential oils

Natural oils do not necessarily mean 100% pure essential oils, and all companies that sell natural oils are not necessarily equal. To keep the price low, natural oils are often diluted or mixed with fillers, dilutants or cheap carrier oils.

Adding additives can lower the potency of natural oils and can even be harmful. These would also not be recommended for therapeutic use.

100% pure essential oils

If you read the label on a bottle of oil and it says “100% natural,” you still have a few things to consider.

100% pure essential oils vs. certified 100% pure therapeutic-grade essential oils

Low grade 100% pure essential oils

Many people are not aware of the fact that there are 100% pure oils that come from fields that may have contaminated oil, or pesticide laden soil that is used to maximise the harvest. There are also artificially created fields that do not have optimal soil quality to ensure a plant grows at its best therapeutic potency. Of course, you won’t see this mentioned anywhere on the label. So, when you buy a 100% pure essential oil, you may think you are getting a quality product, but you might not get the full benefits you expect from it.

Therapeutic-grade 100% pure essential oils

Oils that specifically mention that they are “therapeutic-grade” or ‘USDA organic” have a completely different standard for purity and potency. Maintaining this standard requires effort and care from growing the plants to the bottling the oils. These oils are grown in a natural habit without pesticides, and do not contain any artificial ingredients or fillers, and undergo stringent quality control.

These are the oils you should be using for therapeutic purposes, as they contain the natural active compounds that have incredibly healing properties.
