3 Signs Your Drains Need To Be Cleaned

water draining from a bath

Of all the features of the modern home, drains are perhaps one of the most underappreciated. The ease with which we can dispose of waste today is unparalleled in human history, and it has made a new level of hygiene and cleanliness possible.

But every once in a while, something goes wrong. When we turn on the water, it doesn’t drain away immediately. Strange smells start to emanate from the sink. Things we thought had been washed away gurgle up from the black depths of the drain.

These problems start small, but they can grow worse over time, which is why you should always be on the lookout for these three signs that your drain needs a proper cleaning.

1. Slow Drainage

Slow drainage is usually the first sign clogging has occurred somewhere in your pipes. Most blockages are not initially so bad as to keep the water from draining away entirely, but as time goes one these clogs and grow, slowing the draining process even further.

Blockages can occur in any of your drainage systems, but they are particularly common in showers and kitchen sinks, where hair and food can easily clump up and create masses that are difficult to dislodge.

Depending on how quickly you catch these problems, it may be possible to clear the blockage using a homemade drain cleaner. But if problems persist, you may need to call in a call in a plumber.

2. Strange Odours

If a foul smell has begun to rise from your pipes, there’s a good chance that what’s disappearing down your drain isn’t being washed away for good. Bad odours are a sure sign that something is not quite right with either your drains or your ventilation system, and fixing the problem will involve more than just lighting a candle.

While taking measures to install a drain guard can help reduce the risk of getting rotting food stuck in your drain, if bad smells persist you should get in touch with HVAC and plumbing experts who can help you get to the bottom of things.

3. Water Keeps Backing Up

Of all the drainage problems you can have, this one is the most severe. If water is backing up in your kitchen or bathroom, it’s a sure sign that something has gone very wrong in your plumbing.

While there are several different things that can cause your sewer system to start backing up, the first step to addressing the issue should always be calling a local plumbing expert who can advise you as to how you should proceed.

Drainage systems can be quite complex, and the last thing you want to do is divert your waste into your neighbour’s system!

Being able to quickly and easily wash dirt away is one of the great gifts of modern life. But even the best drains require a little care to keep them running smoothly.

The next time you notice your sink draining more slowly than usual, catch foul whiff rising from your washbasin, or notice that water is backing up, make sure to call a plumber and get it fixed immediately.
